New Year, New Location, New Approach
The first month of 2025 is done, and we’re settling into Manners Street nicely. Now seems like a good time to take stock of ourselves, where we are, and what we face.
Won’t lie, there are new challenges that face us, along with more than a few of the old ones. In some ways the environment is the same, we are still in Central Wellington, surrounded by wonderful Wellingtonians, but also facing the same issues of disruptive works and economic pressures.
Business is erratic, in part because we’re in a new location, it’s taking time to get our coffee flowing, and also because everyone around us is uncertain. What does the future hold? What big thing is going to happen next? What’s the next big expense going to be? With concerns like that it’s easy to hold back on the little pleasures and hobbies that can lift these very same moods.
Challenges upon challenges.
Admittedly the uncertainty weighs on us, just as it does for other groups and individuals, however that means we’re not alone.
For that reason it is good to remember what we can do, for ourselves and for each other.
Sound a little overly optimistic? Perhaps. It beats a lot of the alternatives.
After January it may sound odd to talk about these things, however New Year resolutions are good, for intent. However we all know that it is the action that counts, and sometimes that’s a little more challenging than it should be.
This is why we make no resolutions, we are instead determined to do things differently and are proceeding accordingly.
It’s a slow start, of course, we’ve added some more RPGs, game nights, simple, easy things that start us on the path.
This means that even if you can’t afford that whole book or game, you can spend a little bit over a few few weeks and still get that full gaming experience. All the laughter, all the enjoyment, fewer TPKs if the dice favour you.
An RPG session, short campaign, a night of half a dozen board games, explore what is new and different, hang out with people, meet new people. We’re working to get more of these going, and on keeping them affordable.
Furthermore we’re working towards helping others. To date we’ve had a canned food drive for Compassion House and a straight forward fund raiser for the SPCA. Small beginnings, however we’re planning on at least one charitable or community event each month, and are looking at working with others to help host their events in our space.
If we’re having difficulties why are we helping others?
Why not?
We are in a difficult space, so are others, arguing who has it worse is pointless, especially when one of us can work to help the other out even in their own challenging situation.
It may not help us, but regardless of whether we ourselves can be helped or not, we can do something that makes things better for others.
So we’ll make gaming more accessible, provide more opportunities for social connection, and raise funds and resources for those who need them.
However grim things are we do not have to be.
