The Wellington City Library is still being worked on. Over the school holidays they started cutting concrete, and they’re not stopping. In the meantime a crane has been installed on Wakefield Street in preparation for demolishing a whole other building not more than 30 meters away from us.
That’s just our immediate area, if you walk around Wellington it’s because, quite honestly, driving is almost impossible with the number of road works on the major transport arteries, you’ll see, uh, well, a number of road works on the major transport arteries.
That’s grim. There’s plenty of grim already. Let’s move away from grim for a moment.
We have our Givealittle Page still running, https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/cdgwell, almost another month to go. If you’ve already donated something towards our relocation then you have our thanks, though that feels inadequate for what you’ve done for us.
What can we do in return? Why support us? What do you get when you help us survive and move?
Good and valid questions.
Who benefits when you support CDG, either by patronising us as a business, coming to our events or donating to help us move?
Well, us the business, obviously. The vibrant, vital part of the Wellington economy that buys from local suppliers like Karamu Coffee. The employer of Wellingtonians, who also buy local for lunch and entertainment with their hard earned money.
Local creatives are among that group too. Bespoke Boutique with beautiful dice accessories, Upscale Prints amazing baby dragons, anyone looking for help to design and build a new game. We have offered space, coffee, a venue, advice, input and welcomed the same in return. We try to be more than a business enterprise, we want to be a hub for creative product generation.
The Wellington Gaming community, naturally, benefits. We sell games, we have a Games library, we support (and are generously supported by) Wellycon, and increasingly we are working to reach out to other gaming groups in Wellington, the better to build up the wonderful hobby.
Similarly there are the schools and good causes that come to us looking for promotion in store and support for fundraising and raffles. We've lost count of the number of times we've given a copy of Hoard or Sushi Go to one of these deserving groups.
And lately, even when faced with closure, we've decided to be more proactive. We have reached out to and started donating to Ronald McDonald House, Wellington. We should have done it sooner.
For that reason, if we raise the funds, if we move, if we move where we want to (lot of ifs, but there's a lot going on), if we get a location with more space we will be more proactive again. Working with community and charity groups, LGBT+ organisations, youth groups, anyone we can think of, we will host events to fundraise, promote and however we can support those who have supported us and those in Wellington who have need.
So not only will we do good work we will do more.
Much of this rides on us surviving and thriving, something increasingly difficult for us all.
Success is not guaranteed. It never is.
Nevertheless we are determined to be the best we can be, the best we can offer you, and for us all to grow and thrive together.
This is our promise, thank you for helping us fulfil it.
